Dental emergencies can arise at any time. While many dental emergencies occur due to neglect to one’s oral health, accidents and trauma also make up a large number of the dental emergencies we treat.

Common Dental Emergencies

Some dental emergencies should be addressed immediately while others can wait a day or two. Our friendly and helpful team will help you decide if you need a same-day emergency dental appointment.

Here are some of the common emergencies we treat at St Mark Dental and Medical Group:

• Broken crowns or fillings
• Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
• Loose or tilted teeth
• Sports injuries
• Broken dentures, partial dentures or bridges

Dental pain rarely resolves on its own and often gets worse when left untreated. Rather than wait, you can contact our dental clinic. We strive to help our patients feel healthy and comfortable again.

Dental Emergency Visits

Your emergency dental visit is a problem-focused appointment designed to reduce or eliminate pain and stabilise the condition.

Typically, x-rays of the problematic area will be taken to assist with diagnosis. Our dental team will also ask you a series of questions to uncover the cause of the problem.

• Where is the pain?
• When did it start?
• Was there trauma or an accident?
• Have you had any recent dental work?
• What are the symptoms?

In most cases, we will try to save a tooth with restorative treatment that could include a dental crown, root canal therapy, a filling or other treatment. If none of those is a viable option, we also perform tooth extractions. If extraction becomes necessary, we offer a number of treatment options to replace missing teeth.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While you can’t prevent every unforeseen circumstance, following a few simple guidelines may reduce the likelihood of a dental emergency.

• Maintain good home hygiene
• Have regular check-up and clean appointments
• Wear protective mouthguards while playing sports
• Use a bruxism nightguard if you grind your teeth
