We Have Sedation Dentistry Options

Our Monterey dental clinic offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation options.

Sedation Dentistry

We offer several sedation options at our clinic. To determine if sedation is a safe option, our dentists will perform a full medical history and review any current medications to avoid contraindication.

If dental anxiety prevents you from seeking dental treatment, we invite you to contact our dental practice to arrange a sedation consultation to discuss your options.

Sedation sometimes helps people who have a strong gag reflex, have difficulty sitting still or who have certain medical conditions that make sitting for extended periods uncomfortable. We recommend you discuss sedation dentistry with your medical practitioner to determine if it will benefit you and be a safe option.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry

Often considered the mildest form of sedation, nitrous oxide (sometimes called laughing gas or happy gas) is delivered through a small nose mask as an inhaled analgesic. It is a sweet-smelling gas that is blended with oxygen, and sedation levels can be controlled throughout the procedure.

Nitrous oxide enters and leaves the system quickly. Once the procedure is complete, your dentist will discontinue the administration of nitrous and replace it with pure oxygen to help counteract the sedative effects.

While many people do not require recovery time and can resume normal activities following nitrous oxide sedation, if drowsiness lingers, driving a vehicle is not advised.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

For potentially longer-lasting and possible deeper sedation, your dentist may prescribe prescription medication prior to your procedure. It usually takes about an hour for the medication to take effect. One of our clinical staff will look after you throughout the process.

We prioritise patient safety by monitoring blood pressure and oxygen levels.

Because effects may linger, patients will need someone to accompany them following their treatment on the drive home. Patients should avoid activity or decision making for the rest of the day.

IV Sedation Dentistry

Intravenous (IV) sedation requires an anaesthetist, who will administer the sedation medication through an IV. The levels of sedation may be adjusted throughout the procedure and may be beneficial for longer procedures that outlast the effects of oral sedation. Your anaesthetist will monitor vitals for your safety.

As with oral sedation, having someone look after you post-treatment is recommended as residual grogginess is common and may impair the ability to operate a vehicle or resume normal activities.

We Invite Your Call

If you are interested in learning more about sedation dentistry, we invite you to contact our Monterey dental clinic to arrange a consultation with one of our dentists, Dr Evet Ishak, Dr David Bashout or Dr Mina Azmi.

We warmly welcome new patients.
